INDEPENDENT READING
English III/IV/101-102
Independent Reading- Responding to Literature
Students will be completing logs. These logs will be a part of a "60 per week" plan for engaging in more quality reading for each student.
Instead of reading one outside book and completing one project per quarter, students will be required to complete reading logs each week documenting what they read outside of school that week and provide response writing on the texts. They will be asked to read for 60 minutes each week and document the experience.
The 60 minute requirement can be completed in any increments of the students' choosing (i.e., all in one sitting, 10 minutes at a time, etc.). Additionally, students are expected to read substantial, rigorous texts in which they are engaging not only in reading but in learning as well. Examples could include the sports section from a newspaper, novels, nonfiction books, blogs, magazines, etc. A mixture of texts for the week is acceptable, too, as long as students are completing a minimum of 60 reading minutes.
Texts NOT PERMISSIBLE for reading credit will be picture books/magazines with more than 20% illustrations, assigned reading from any current classes, and social media sources. Students are also encouraged to read texts in which they are interested.
To keep track of the reading minutes and to provide a response to the material encountered, logs will be due every Monday. The log template can be viewed as a Google Doc further down the page.
